Tell them: &#8220;That&#8217;s a great idea! Please send that to me in a formal Change Request so I can analyze it properly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A simple Change Request can be an email or a form with three questions:<\/p>\n<ol start=\"1\">\n<li><b>What is the change?<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Why is this change needed?<\/b> (What is the business value?)<\/li>\n<li><b>How urgent is it?<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Step 2: You, the PM, Analyze the Impact<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This is your job. You present the <i>choice<\/i>, not the problem.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Instead of saying &#8220;No,&#8221; you say:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We can absolutely add that new button. My analysis shows it will add 10 hours of development and 5 hours of testing, which will cost $1,500 and delay our &#8216;Go-Live&#8217; date by 3 days.<\/p>\n<p><b>Do you approve that trade-off?<\/b>&#8220;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>You have now changed the conversation. You&#8217;re not the &#8220;bad guy&#8221; saying no. You are the &#8220;expert PM&#8221; providing the <i>data<\/i> so the <i>client<\/i> can make an informed, strategic decision.<\/p>\n<p>Nine times out of ten, they will say, &#8220;Oh, it&#8217;s not worth delaying the project. Let&#8217;s add it to Phase 2.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And just like that, you have stopped scope creep.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Stop Fearing Scope Creep.
